BJP’s First Lok Sabha Poll List: Over Half Retained, Major Changes in Seats Won in 2019

With the release of its first list of Lok Sabha candidates, the BJP has kickstarted its election campaign, focusing on continuity and strategic changes. Out of 195 candidates announced across 18 states, over half are existing MPs, showcasing the party’s confidence in its incumbents. However, significant reshuffles are observed, particularly in seats won during the 2019 elections.

The BJP’s strategy involves re-fielding 108 sitting MPs and reintroducing 8 leaders who lost in the last elections. Notably, only 3 of the new faces are recent additions who were sitting MPs from other parties. The decision to retain incumbents reflects the party’s trust in proven performers, while simultaneously introducing fresh faces to invigorate its ranks.

States where the BJP holds a strong presence witness minimal changes, such as Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. However, significant alterations are observed in states like Assam, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, and Kerala, where the political landscape demands adaptation.

A total of 33 sitting MPs have been dropped, including prominent figures like Harsh Vardhan, Meenakshi Lekhi, and Ramesh Bidhuri. This move indicates the party’s willingness to rejuvenate its leadership and adapt to evolving electoral dynamics.

Among the 79 seats featuring new candidates, those previously won by the BJP outnumber those lost, showcasing the party’s strategic focus on consolidating its gains. Notably, many sitting MPs have transitioned to state assemblies, necessitating replacements.

The BJP’s efforts to expand its presence in Kerala are evident, with notable inclusions like V Muraleedharan and Rajeev Chandrasekhar. In Telangana and West Bengal, where the party aims for growth, strategic candidate selections underscore its aspirations.

In summary, the BJP’s first list reflects a balance of continuity and change, emphasizing strategic adaptations to consolidate power and achieve electoral success. With the stage set for intense political battles, the party’s candidate selection signals its determination to navigate diverse electoral landscapes effectively.
